When my client returned from work to discover the sudden devastation caused by pollarding a large willow in a neighbouring property, she knew it was time to tackle her own garden.

The garden was a double plot which had been very much underused and neglected over the years. The main access to was through double doors and onto a raised timber deck, used occasionally for dining.

The new garden has a contemporary feel even though the materials used are largely traditional. The design is based on overlapping circles which use the whole space and lead the eye around the garden. Old clay pavers have been used for the pathways, dining area in shade and a seating area to catch the evening sun.

The new entrance to the garden is somewhat grander. A sawn York stone balcony with a frameless glass balustrade replaces the old timber deck and wide bullnose steps lead to ground level. Extra detailing is provided by York stone edging to the lawn and clay tile detail in the centre of the paved circles. Privacy is provided by pleached evergreen hedging and strategically place silver birch trees, my clients favourite.
